China Mobile, the biggest carrier in the world's largest cell-phone market, added almost 5 million subscribers in less than three months.

China Mobile on Saturday said it had 74.59 million subscribers as of March 20. The carrier has added well over 10 million subscribers in the six months since Sept. 20, 2001.

China Mobile at the end of last year had a dominant 72.4 percent share of China's cellular market ahead of rival China Unicom.

The company also said it now has over 25.25 million mobile data users, and transmitted 4.21 billion SMS (Short Message Service) text messages between Jan. 1 and March 20. The popularity of SMS continues to surge forward - China Mobile transmitted over 6 billion messages during 2001.

The company last month reported full-year 2001 revenues of 100.3 billion yuan ($12.12 billion), up 54 percent on year 2000 revenues.

China Mobile tallied a 55 percent jump in net profits during 2001 to 28 billion yuan ($3.38 billion).
