Dear Bill and Joe:

There are HP ink jet printers that use separate cartridges, the HP1200, HP1600 and HP2000. Also all of the large format plotters use this method and some even allow for getting inks from barrels for those really high volume users. Yes they are expensive, but they do have much cheaper per page ink costs. My dad has a HP1600CM he bought used. It does a teriffic job for both draft and presentation style output. It just does not do photo quality all that well.
