Did he earn the right to be Dictator-For-Life?

That wasn't the issue then. He was the one they wanted, the only one who had the nationwide following and the level of organization to govern the country. What they did with him once they had him would have been their business. In an analogous case, Sukarno certainly wanted to be dictator for life. He wasn't.
