Centennial de Puerto Rico has launched its cdma2000 1x network, which is branded as 'Turbonet'. The service is available for USD 30 per month, although Centennial is offering unlimited free data minutes until 2 May 2002. After this users will be charged according to their choice of Centennial's tariff plans depending on whether the Kyocera 2235 or GTRAN's DotSurfer 2100 data card is used.

The Kyocera handset is available for USD 199 with a one year contract or USD 99 with a two year contract. The tariff plans are the same as Centennial's postpaid 'Multiflex' voice plans and data minutes are subtracted from the included total.

Tariff Included Additional
(USD) Minutes Minutes (USD)

29.95 200 0.35
39.95 400 0.35
49.95 700 0.25
69.95 1000 0.20
99.95 1500 0.16
149.95 2300 0.15
199.95 3300 0.15

The GTRAN card is available for USD 250 with a one year contract or USD 199 with a two year contract. The data only tariffs are:

Tariff Included Additional
(USD) Minutes Minutes (USD)

25.00 200 0.18
35.00 350 0.15
50.00 750 0.10
75.00 1250 0.07

Coverage of the network is limited to Mayaguez, Ponce, Arecibo, San Juan and its surrounding regions. According to Centennial, the data rate fluctuates between 30Kbps and 60Kbps, depending on the circumstances and equipment used. <<

AT&T Wireless to enhanced 3G services from TDMA to GSM/GPRS to EDGE/UMTS.

Two interesting bullets on slide #12
Committed to EDGE Deployment in 2002
UMTS Market trial around year end 2002

There won't be many EDGE or UMTS handsets available in 2002, IMHO, but they should find enough for trials and PR.

Post Script.: Also slide #5, their speed comparision chart. They show 1xRTT delivering twice the speed of their GPRS and 1xEV-DO as faster than their EDGE. About time they admitted it, but oh yeah, speed doesn't matter. <g>
