If religion only looked for meaning withinn the framework of the known and knowable (the field of science) then one could see the eventual mergence of science and religion. However, religion has always looked for meaning outside of the known and the knowable. I believe that it always will, for this is the nature of mysticism. Therefore, I do not think that science and religion can walk the same path. If it is on a path, it is something real and knowable, and thus not of the supernatural.

If we find that there is a god controlling each of the planets, then that will simply become part of our scientific knowledge, and an additional strain on our military budget: while the "real" meaning of life will continue to exist in someones head as revelation.

And those who have the "real" meaning will wear mysterious clothing in mysterious buildings--and their words and their eyes will continue to be mysterious...
