BERLIN (AP) -- Germany's opposition conservatives posted a landslide win in elections in an economically depressed eastern state Sunday, handing Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder a sharp setback five months before national elections, projections based on early returns showed.

Schroeder's Social Democrats, who have governed Saxony-Anhalt for the last eight years, plunged dramatically to below 20 percent, a loss of nearly 16 percentage points and their worst result in the state since German reunification in 1990, according to projections compiled by German television.

The Christian Democrats surged to about 37 percent, a gain of 15 percent over the last ballot four years ago, making them the strongest force in the state, the projections said. The figures also showed the pro-business Free Democrats re-entered the statehouse with 13 percent of the vote, a gain of nearly 9 points.

Wow, indeed. Maybe the average French working guy has had enough of M.Jospin's see-no-evil approach to unruly and unassimilated Muslim populations? Nearly 10% of France is Arab now, I believe. Talk about sending a message!

Le Pen is a piece of work. I heard on the radio on the way to work that he considers the Holocaust "a detail of history."

Rising crime in France, and the perception that immigrants are primarily responsible for it, seems to be the reason for his win over Jospin.

Before we get too self-righteous, it is important to note that something disturbingly similar happened in Louisiana not too long ago, when David Duke won the right to a run-off against Edwin Edwards. The crook against the Nazi.
