I think the fact that Le Pen got close to 18% of the popular vote and Chirac around 20% is an indication that racial powers are on the rise in France and possible in Europe. This also explains why synagogues started to burn in France and why so many incidence of violence against the Jewish community took place there. I don't know, Haim, it seems to me that Le Pen's victory could cut both ways. He's very anti-immigrant, so maybe the French decided to cast an anti-Arab vote? They certainly don't love their unruly and unassimilated Arabs, who are now nearly 10% of the population, I believe. Do you know what he campaigned on?

I think this represents a definite swing in public opinion, more right of center. As Nadine suggests, LePen is more anti-Arab (immigrant) than he is presumably Anti-Semitic.... "La France aux Francais" In any event, Le Pen is not the real story here, Le Pen will not likely receive any more votes than he did in the primary. Chirac will win in a landslide. I think Chirac will tend to be more supportive and allied to US interests and efforts. Its a complicated world but at least this vote is encouraging that Europe will speak with somewhat more unison with the US. In truth, however, I actually meant to post this on another thread, buit accidentally hit this one. HH
