Hello Ike... I'm not quite as worried as some about this "coup de théâtre".

What I see is a shift of stupid and useless protest votes from the extreme left and communists to the extreme right, and not a lot else. The PC in France has registered its lowest score ever, well off the highs when the Communists were even more important than the Socialists, or even their weight during Mitterand's years. These people clearly aren't now voting Jospin or Chirac ! And the abstentionnists certainly share some guilt, since according to the polls the French are in love with, everyone "knew" that it was 50-50 between Jospin and Chirac, so why bother voting for the first round ?

I also think Jospin really doesn't have anyone to blame but himself, any more than Gore in our election. In both cases, these candidates lost long before the actual voting, and not merely in the last few weeks... by, during their previous years in government, acting like fools, pandering to a superficial public image rather than addressing real problems, in short by failing to demonstrate leadership. And they have been sanctioned as a result.

After his loss by a matter of seconds to Greg Lemond in the final time trail of le Tour de France, Laurent Fignon said that he'd really lost the race in a thousand places during the previous 3 weeks of racing.

Something politicians in democratic countries should keep in mind when thinking of what their job really is.

Hope you're enjoying Paris a bit quand même !
