Tom,

<< Won't the AMR and frequency hopping take a year or two to have any effect on capacity? >>

Yes.

Just like 1xRTT.

<< Aren't the gains from AMR dependent on new handset deployment?

Yes.

<< So as GPRS handsets are deployed they use up 4x capacity (4 channels) (when used) >>

No. Do your homework on that one.

<< Net net this is still sucking up capacity. >>

Yes. Just like 1xRTT sucks up data capacity when data services are employed and utilized.

In the case of GPRS, which is a capacity hog, at such time as data demand dictates, a carrier adds GPRS capacity OR does a software upgrade to EDGE.

Here in the US of course (and Mexico & Canada) we are only talking about GPRS as a bearer for a relatively short period of time. The 5 major carriers are all going EDGE ...

... and someday when necessary WCDMA, and then WCDMA with HSDPA.

... but why beat the GPRS horse?

GPRS is the bearer. That's all.

<< Only if a lot of other handsets not using GPRS are sold with AMR would their be any savings. >>

No, not really. think that one through.

The question is not savings, it is having adequate capacity for services offered, and there are lots of ways to skin that cat.

GSM, in contrast to QCDMA, works on these little independent 200kHz bandwidths, not
huge 1.25MHZ plus additional guardbands and unpredicatable cocktail parties.

Pretty similar to the dream of OFDMA.

Ilmarinen

That is why Viterbi made the decision of splitting CDMA voice and data, and to move over to OFDMA,
although it comes naturally for GSM.

WCDMA is obviously designed to run as an alternative, addition to GSM, really smart.

pretty close as difficult as WAP+GPRS, not to forget those funny ones claiming
the path to heaven is compression of html....
