ASE Test Probably Turned to Loss in 1st Qtr on Slow Chip Demand
By Alan Patterson

Taipei, April 22 (Bloomberg) -- ASE Test Ltd., the world's biggest tester of chips, probably turned to a loss in the first quarter because of a slower-than-expected rebound in demand for its services, analysts said.

Nasdaq-listed ASE Test may have posted a loss of 18 cents a share in the three months ended March 31, compared with a net income of 9 cents a share a year ago, according to the average of estimates from six analysts surveyed by IBES. Sales probably fell to $68 million from $103 million.

ASE Test, which reports earnings tomorrow after the Nasdaq ends trading, predicted in February it will return to profit by the third quarter. First-quarter gross and operating margins will match those in the fourth quarter, the company said.

The company, which tests chips for customers such as Motorola Inc. and Conexant Systems Inc., turned to a loss in the second quarter last year after slowing economic growth sapped demand for products that use chips. Makers of communications products, which are among ASE Test's biggest customers, cut orders after turning to losses last year.
