The word on the street is that distributors are about to deliver news of a rough March quarter. In spite of reports that distributors hit the downturn bottom during fourth quarter 2001, it looks like the first quarter of 2002 will show a further drop.
In a guidance report on the March quarter from Cleveland-based Pioneer-Standard Electronics Inc. last week, the company disclosed a 30 percent sales decline compared with the same period last year. Including special charges, Pioneer expects to report a loss of 23 cents to 25 cents per share. Without the special charges, the company anticipates a slight profit of 2 cents to 4 cents per share.

At Bell Microproducts Inc. in San Jose, reported revenues and earnings last week were more positive. Revenues for the March quarter were $523 million, down 2 percent year-over-year and down 1 percent from the preceding quarter, demonstrating some stabilization. The company did particularly well on earnings, showing a gross profit of 9.1 percent, up from 8.5 percent year-over-year and up from 8.6 percent in the fourth quarter of 2001. Despite the positive performance, company President and CEO Don Bell characterized the quarter as a “continuing difficult market environment.” Bell attributed the company’s performance to its storage systems and solutions content product lines.
