Worldwide PC shipments remained sluggish in the first quarter of 2002, with the outlook for the rest of the year uncertain, according to two key market research reports.

Gartner Dataquest said late Thursday that global PC shipments totalled 32.7 million in the first quarter of 2002, flat in growth terms over the same period last year.

A separate study by International Data Corp. found the global market in the first three months of the year down 2.7 percent, with 31.4 million units shipped.

"The market is no longer contracting rapidly, and the gains made in the fourth quarter have not evaporated," said Loren Loverde.

The US market is slowly coming back, according to both groups, despite an 0.4 percent decline year on year noted by IDC.
