Tokyo Bourse Evacuated on Bomb Threat, None Found

TOKYO (Reuters) - Some 800 people were evacuated from the Tokyo Stock Exchange after a telephone caller threatened to blow up Japan's biggest securities bourse along with a top brokerage and one of the capital's busiest train stations.

But officials said no bombs had been found and the alert was canceled about half an hour after morning trade had begun using the exchange's computerized trading system.

The nearby headquarters of Japan's biggest brokerage, Nomura Securities Co Ltd, and JR Tokyo train station were also searched but no bombs were discovered.

The masses of commuters who throng the central station every morning were not affected, and a Nomura spokesman said it was business as usual at the giant Japanese brokerage.

Bomb threats are relatively rare in Japan, although a rash of scares forced several financial firms to clear their offices in the wake of the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington.
