They number about 1,700 US print US newspapers, primarily dailies, who are assessed an annual dues based on a formula involving circulation, etc. Another 5000 domestic radio stations and TV outlets subscribe to various portions of its service. It has another 8000 or so foreign subscribers. The AP moves copy in five languages with a daily output of about 15,000,000 words and inaccuracies do creep into its file. To protect is reputation for accuracy, it carries corrections on an urgent basis. A major check on inaccuracies goes well beyond its own editors since its members and subscribers have the right to question the accuracy of any stories it carries. Thus, in the US alone, it has 1700 newspaper editors who read its copy and they vary from left to right in their political orientation. I don't want to go on too long but the greatest tribute to the wire services I've seen came from columnist Mary McGrory some years ago. She described them as the "foot soldiers" of the news business. For CB: You neglected to mention Agence France Presse as an international wire service. It reports in three languages and if you look at your Washington Post you'll find that it uses AFP photos almost every day, often more than that of AP or Reuters. While I don't see the Washington Times often, I believe it subscribes as well to AFP. UPI is trying to reinvent itself as an internet content provider
