In my opinion, if you have a 5 year extended on site warranty from Gateway, they should complete whatever repairs are necessary to leave you with a reliable system. That system should also contain your important data: documents, spreadsheets, E-mail...

This service should minimize disruption to your life and work.

My standards may or may not have been adopted by Gateway.

I don't believe it would be ethical for the Gateway technician to accept payment from you and at the same time draw salary from Gateway. If this person were willing to perform some work for you outside of those hours normally devoted to Gateway's business, and the work performed had no negative impact on Gateway, and Gateway doesn't forbid this practice, then it may be acceptable.

A reasonable payment would be the normal hourly rate for technical servicepeople in your area.

If XP can be installed on your hardware, I'd upgrade.
