I did not know about Italy and the Netherlands and had completely forgotten about Haider.

In this context, it certainly appears that Le Pen's win over Jospin is a part of a larger trend, not a bizarre anomaly. The inclusion of the Dutch in the group of European countries with far right wins is telling--I can't imagine a less receptive spot for the far right.

Though Chirac will trounce Le Pen, it will be interesting to see how he fares.

I'm hoping that CobaltBlue will comment on this (or has already). The last truly big resurgence of the far right in European politics was associated with a very severe economic downturn.
