I've always pictured Karen as a 'sensible shoes' blonde....

"That is why I bristle when I hear the people of this country characterized as "cherishing" the freedom to hate."

I might choose to hate the practice of adultery as a commitment to principle or because of some associated tragedy that has touched my own life. I reserve the right to consider situations and the plight of the participants individually. Hating an individual because of genetic or cultural association is bigotry and I hate that kind of hating. If this is the kind of "cherishing" the freedom to hate of which X speaks, then I am in full agreement. I'd ask her but she hates talking to me.

I imagine she reacts the same way when she encounters your Pollyanna characterization, hence her response.

The real country is a mix of the sublime, the downright nasty, and the mundane.
