Sorry to be the one to break this to you but you'd have a better chance of getting answers to serious questions elsewhere. They are everything from free to hundreds of thousands of dollars per seat. "How does embedded software play into the process and what sort of tools are used there?" Again, a very open question. For one, what kind of embedded are you talking about? Embedded projects are everything from a man in a garage to what is done to get a warship or airliner done. Remember that systems like the air traffic control system or the phone system are embedded applications. You need to narrow your focus somewhat. The get general news, eet.com is a good place to start.
