It can be. We feed Purina Senior. It's lower in fat and protein plus it's a better protein so it's easier on the dog's kidneys.

Like a vet once told me, you could grind up shoe sole leather and rotten potatoes and pour motor oil over it and it would test out as x amount of protein, x amount of carbohydrates and x amount of fat.
