Strange, isn't it?

In the US, the Christian right appears to be solidly behind Israel while the European far right is anti-Semitic.

Yesterday, just for grins, I tuned into one of the religious programs that are televised on Sunday mornings to get a sense of what it is that the Christian right is into these days. Heard a sermon backing Israel unconditionally, with all the appropriate Biblical references from St. Paul's letters to the Romans. The audience was enthralled.

There was damned little discussion of a political agenda, though it was clearly present in the subtext. The support was rationalized on a Scriptural interpretation which I didn't particularly follow.

In fact in France many Le Pen voters have abandoned the extreme left and the communists.

I'm almost certain that very few mainstream voters have shifted to vote for Le Pen in France, though a notable number were abstentionnistes in this first round. After all, the totality of polls were showing a neck and neck race against Chirac and Jospin, why bother ?

In the past the Communist Party enjoyed far higher scores, and was ahead of the Socialist Party after WWII. In this election Robert Hue got well under 4 %, the lowest score the PC had had ever.

I mention this since I'm unsure how significant this swing to the right really is. When centrist voters start voting for a Le Pen, then watch out !
