George,

My picks are in order:

1.Brazil - with Ronaldo back and if Rivaldo is on form anyway. Will fare better in the heat than most.

2.Argentina - not my favorite team but they do have a wealth of great forwards you have to admit.

3. Italy - Superb defense and their playing style will be effective in the high temperatures expected.

4. France - Yes only fourth. I could be wrong and probably am but I have a sense of pride coming before a fall with them.

Longshots: Cameroon (45 to 1) and Nigeria (100 to 1) could be surprises.

Disasters waiting to happen: I wonder if England and Germany will make it out of their groups. Both will struggle in the conditions.

I am going to stick (for now -g) with my original pick...

Message 16732278

The weather is going to affect the outcome too... and so there may be some advantage to the Latin American teams (i.e. Brazil and Argentina mainly)...

Still... Brazil seems to be not as together as usual and Argentina may have some hidden psychological effects as the nation is going through considerable economic turmoil that may hit some of the families of the players... who knows...

So for now, I keep my initial pick.

___________

I think that there is more emotion and passion in the WC, but perhaps more quality in a Club Championship final... hard to say when I think about some of the games I have seen... (and I suppose one's own state of mind as we watch the event may have something to do) either way I have always had a lot of fun and enjoyed the game a lot.

Criminals Surrender After World Cup Ultimatum

LONDON (Reuters) - Soccer-mad criminals have been turning themselves in to British police stations in the hope of completing a short jail sentence in time to watch the World Cup, British newspapers reported on Friday.

In 'Operation Red Card', police in Hertfordshire, north of London, sent a simple message to defendants who have been failing to turn up in court: surrender now or spend the World Cup in a police cell with no television, according to the Evening Standard newspaper.

"One man even turned up to court with his bag packed, expecting a short spell in prison," it quoted Hertfordshire's Sergeant Nigel Eastaugh as saying.

"No doubt he wanted to get his sentence over and done with to make sure he would be free again in time for the World Cup," he added.

The paper said the 296 letters sent to offenders' last known addresses had resulted in 17 people walking into local police stations to face charges such as assault and theft, while 10 had turned up for court hearings.

But criminals who are not soccer fans are not safe. Eastaugh said that as a result of the mailing, police had received 60 tip-offs on the whereabouts of other offenders who would be rounded up in the coming weeks.
