Pat Buchanan actually won a primary.

I have complete confidence that a culture sophisticated enough to appreciate the magical combination of Yquem and Roquefort is sophisticated enough to have a little amusement at Le Pen's expense.

Besides, the World Cup starts in six weeks and there isn't time to find replacements for Zidane and Henry.

He only got 17% of the vote, which is just under 12% of those eligible to vote (with a 70% turnout). I guess his supporters, being fanatics, are more likely to vote than the mainstream population.

Also, those voting knew that there is another round to go. Sure they could have chosen someone else to get their protest vote instead but I think that by making the out of Europe offer he has picked up some "supporters" that we would hope will think more carefully about voting next time where he would actually become leader if he won.

I think that Europe (Western Europe at least) is too much of a cosmopolitan zone for Xenophobia to gain hold. The melting pot has been going on long enough for everybody to get along fine as far as I can see.

Eastern Europe may have some problems in this department though, with problems in Ex USSR involving gangs of skinheads beating up blacks, Asians and Arabs.

But you are right that there is reason to be concerned because some of his supporters will see it as a validation of their beliefs and may feel more cocky about demonstrations, marches or worse.
