Whatever the ultimate truth about the military budget, there is not time for the thoroughgoing, top to bottom review that is needed, at the moment. The previous Administration did not have the economy part right, which is part of the reason we are in the doldrums. We are, in any case, not putting the wealthy on welfare, we are taking less of their income, and allowing it to be spent or invested by them, instead of the government. One of the things I have called for is intelligent borrowing, so I remain untroubled by deficits. All "flat tax" proposals involve the elimination of most or all deductions. We do not have the clout to radically reduce the size of government, and the previous Administration took undue credit, since most of the size reduction was from civilian employees in the defense sector. We have different prognostications for the economy, and will have to wait and see, but it is clear that the Federal government will not be much smaller for some time, and that will prevent some of the programs I would like to see initiated from coming to be for awhile, although some are feasible. I have mever claimed to tell you what was in your "mind's eye", I have only commented on the ordinary meaning of words that you have posted.........
