M-16 was revamped

My personal experience is so far back that I had a "Grease Gun", (that is what they issued us "Remington Raiders, you know, the shop clerks who pounded the Remington typewriter) :), and the M-1 was still the rifle.

so it's not really the same weapon as was deployed in Vietnam..

Yeah, Army Ordnance took the perfectly good AR15 and really screwed it up. What they needed to do, from what I have read, is to chome the receiver to eliminate jams, put a heavier barrel on it, and a stronger front stock. Instead they mickeymoused it, and the first year in "nam there were a lot of jams, and people got killed because of that in firefights.

major beef with the weapon is its vulnerability to jamming when a little sand gets in it

That is what I have read. I have read that the AK47 is so loose that you can let it set and rust, kick the action open with your foot, and fire it.

I think the Army is up to its old tricks, trying to give the grunt a "major weapons system" instead of just a top quality rifle. There is more money to be spent this way, and more Defense contractors will make money. The semi-auto 20mm grenade launcher addition looks spiffy, and would be great if they can keep the weight down. I have not been able to find the weight on the OIWC, but if you look at the pictures, it looks like at least 15 pounds.

put a few rounds through a Galil and I just loved the weapon. Very reliable.

I read the specs and it seems to be a great desert rifle. here is a good URL on it

We seem to be trying to turn the grunts into "Starship Troopers". Hell, give them good boots, clothes, food, and weapons, and spend the money on training.
