the problem with the Gerecht hypothesis is that it only works when you really turn up the juice, and the Israelis (thank god) don't really have it in them to do that (or are restrained from doing so by various factors including us).

There seems to be a definite ratcheting effect at work. At each stage the Israelis are allowed to use only so much juice, by themselves and us, primarily. But each round has more juice than the last. We will probably have another round of bombing and retaliation to go before the Israelis destroy the remains of the PA and reoccupy.

Even though this round was limited, it demonstrated that Israeli reservists are quite able to beard the lion in his den -- take on Hamas fighters in their own 'camps', and have the cojones to blow through walls and knock down buildings to win the day. I think everybody has taken due notice, and will spend some time thinking up new strategies for next time.

<<So I'd bet that all they've achieved is to temporarily suppress the immediate threat while creating more headaches for themselves, and us, down the road.>>

I couldn't agree more. Nothing like some short term gains that may provide long term pain...IMO, the U.S. needs to act more like a parent and impose and enforce a solution. What are your thoughts on Carter's recent editorial in the New York Times..??
