ASML Gets Order For EUV Systems From Intel

AMSTERDAM -(Dow Jones)- Dutch semiconductor equipment maker ASML Holding NV ( ASML) said Monday it has received an order for an "extreme ultraviolet," or EUV, lithography machine from Intel Corp (NasdaqNM: INTC - news) (INTC).

No terms of the deal were disclosed. ASML is due to deliver the system in the second half of 2005.

Lithography tools typically cost $8 million, or more for the most cutting-edge tools, like the one purchased by Intel. Lithography uses focused light to map out the circuitry of semiconductor chips.

ASML said that the tool in question is the first ever to use EUV light, which has a wavelength of 13.5 nanometers, 10 times smaller than wavelengths used in the current generation of technology.

It said the tool will be used to create circuitry layers with feature sizes smaller than 45 nanometers.
