I really have little acquaintance with guns. My idea of survival skills, for an urban Outward Bound, is: learn how to make hotel reservations on the Internet for an optimal price; learn to hail a cab; learn how to avoid a bad case of museum fatigue; learn how to time dinner so you can make the theater; learn how to tip without either losing your shirt or creating enemies; and the like.......

I think kids ought to be taught about gun safety and training when they're young, under strict supervision.

I was trained, at an NRA-approved range, where we couldn't even pick up a firearm until learning and showing that we understood "the rules." I went on to win a few local competitions and earn a couple of patches.

Today, 30+ years later, I occasionally shoot trap, and those lessons still ring true.

Guns aren't for messing around with. But coupled with maturity, intelligence, and respect, they provide the basis for lots of good, clean sports.
