Holding together a right-wing "Republican" coalition of "base supporters" is difficult. Cultural conservatives, religious conservatives, taxation conservatives, big business conservatives, old-fashioned Barry Goldwater conservatives, gun-nut conservatives ... they all have separate agendas that they want moved to the top of the priority list.

What united them all two years ago, of course, was a common hatred for Clinton-Gore. But that rage factor might be tapped out. What GWB is trying to do is to steer a more centrist course, lest the Republicans become an endangered species like the Conservative Party in Great Britain.
