Sharon thumbs his nose at Bush once more! Israel Stands Firm, Will Not Cooperate With U.N. Jenin Team Prime Minister Ariel Sharon announced last night that Israel would not cooperate with the United Nations fact-finding team expected to arrive in Israel later this week. The team's mandate is not to investigate the terrorist attacks of the past 19 months, but rather Israel's response to them, and specifically the battles in Jenin. Defense Minister Ben-Eliezer said that it had asked the UN not to send the commission until its composition and goals are agreed upon. UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan announced that despite the Israeli decision, the team will arrive here on Saturday. Prime Minister Sharon explained that Israel changed its mind regarding the mission after Annan altered the mission’s mandate without consulting Israel. The UN team contains political officials instead of military experts, and Israel suspects that the UN plans to inspect other PLO areas and ultimately to send Israel to the International Court of Justice in Hague. Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Yehuda Lancry, explained that Israel is seeking a more balanced team that would include military and anti-terror experts. The team currently includes the former president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Cornelio Sommaruga; former UN high commissioner for refugees Sadako Ogata; and ex-Finnish president Martti Ahtisaari. A late add-on to the staff is US Army General William Nash. Israel was pleased by the addition of Nash, figuring that he will recognize that Jenin was a battle between IDF troops and Arab gunmen, and not an Israeli “massacre” as PLO propaganda has it. Government Minister Effie Eitam (National Religious Party) said that there is no reason to have the UN fact-finders meet with and take testimony from IDF soldiers who fought in Jenin. He said that all the battles were photographed from the air, and the films show the soldiers calling on the inhabitants to leave their homes in order not to be harmed. "The films prove that there was no massacre," Eitam said. The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations sharply accused the UN of "a blatant attempt to establish a prejudicial body and process." A statement released yesterday by the organization says, "In keeping with the U.N.’s traditional biased approach toward Israel, the commission to investigate events in Jenin was established without consultation with Israel... Israel should not cooperate with the commission as currently envisaged." The Conference suggests that Israel "consider approaching alternative bodies that would be capable of carrying out an impartial and credible investigation. This is all the more important given the distortion, misrepresentation and misstatements regarding what really occurred in Jenin. Already some of the exaggerations and misrepresentations have been proven false..." israelnationalnews.com
