Osaka, Japan, April 24 (Bloomberg) -- Sharp Corp. will build a factory in Japan to produce liquid-crystal displays to meet an expected surge in demand for new types of screens for cellular phones and other mobile devices.

Japan's biggest LCD maker will build the plant in Mie prefecture, where it operates factories producing large-sized screens for digital televisions and computer monitors, spokesman Yukiyasu Uno said. Sharp will spend about 50 billion yen ($384 million) on the new plant, which will begin operations in the autumn of 2003, according to Heihachiro Ochiai, another spokesman.

Sharp will announce its plans regarding the new plant at a press conference in Tokyo and Osaka at 3:30 p.m. local time.

Osaka-based Sharp is adding more features to its screens to compete with South Korean and Taiwanese rivals. Large-sized LCD prices fell by more than half in the two years ended December after those companies began mass producing the screens.
