Cymer Inc., a maker of excimer light sources used to make semiconductors, today posted first quarter net income of $4. million, or 12 cents per diluted share, on revenue of $62 million.

San Diego-based Cymer returned to profitability during the quarter, after posting a net loss of $1.9 million, or 6 cents per share, for the fourth quarter. However, the company’s net income was still about half the $8.3 million, or 27 cents per share reported a year ago.

Revenues were up 13 percent from the previous quarter’s $54.8 million, but lower than the $91.2 million posted for the same period a year ago.

"Top line growth over the previous quarter was attributable to competitive wins and ongoing technology buys. Additionally, demand increased for our consumables and spare parts, sales of which were up approximately 6 percent over the fourth quarter 2001 level and were up for the first time in five quarters," said Bob Akins, Cymer’s CEO, in a statement.

Cymer said it is seeing some signs of recovery and is expecting second quarter revenue to increase 15 percent to 20 percent sequentially. The company is planning to release a quarterly update in June.
