Gates Concedes Key Word but Slams Plan By Peter Kaplan WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates conceded in court on Tuesday that two rival companies hobbled by Microsoft's anticompetitive tactics had the potential to challenge the Windows operating system. ADVERTISEMENT In his second day on the witness stand, Gates recanted a single, but possibly important, word in his written testimony. Gates had testified that the Netscape Navigator Internet browser and Sun Microsystems Inc.'s Java programming language ``supposedly'' had the potential to become software platforms that could compete with Windows. But Gates backed away from the word ``supposedly'' when challenged by Steve Kuney, an attorney for nine states still pursuing stiff antitrust sanctions against the software giant despite a proposed settlement of the landmark case. ``I'd be glad to strike the word 'supposedly,' '' Gates said. ``I'm always interested in hearing ways you want to change your sworn testimony,'' Kuney shot back. The concession could prove important as it goes to one of Microsoft's lines of defense. The company's attorneys have argued that it's inappropriate to impose severe sanctions because Navigator and Java never posed a serious threat to Windows.
