Maurice, while the post you refer to may not be totally relavent, it, coupled with the Friedman analagy of the best selling book in China is "How to get your daughter into Harvard", while much of the Arab world talks about how to get your children to kill themselves, adds some relavance to the overall.

Societies that are forward looking think about how to assist their children in making a better life than the parents had. Usually that leads to some results. Jews, have always (since the dark ages) had that vision, and that is why as a people we've always led the world in literacy. That is why we prospered during the dawn of the industrial age, and conversely that is why the Arab world has massive unemployment, poor economic infrastructures, etc. They don't care enough about the future, and look back to the 12th and 13th century too much of the time.

If Islamic fathers had their 3 year old daughters dressed up holding books rather than dressed up in suicide belts, we might get someplace.

My suggestion is that Chinese book on going to Harvard, needs to be translated into Arabic right now.
