Jane, only good thing about Emeryville is that is close to the Bay Bridge which goes to San Francisco. Emeryville is almost a "non entity". Closest good beach is Santa Cruz about 70-90 minutes from Emeryville. There may be some closer decent beaches a little south of San Francisco. Lots of other stuff to do as I'm sure you are aware.

OT:

Hey Jane -
Emeryville is right next to Berkeley but right on the
edge of the eastern side of the SF bay.

You could go to Stinson beach which is North of SF.
Be about 45-55 min drive. Beautiful area around there.

Hi Jane,

Emeryville left me a bad impression. My 15 year old son was beat up by a bunch of gang bangers there, about 4 years ago. I know it could have happened plenty of other places. Just don't go out after dark.<g>

I would recommend going south for the beaches. Only problem is traffic. Of course that's a problem almost anywhere in the bay area.

:o)

Jane,

Emeryville maps.yahoo.com is sort of a big freeway intersection with lots of "big box" shopping centers. But, the water side has great views of the City, (S.F.), and it's centrally located to go anywhere in the Bay Area.

Our beaches tend to be pretty foggy until mid-August, but you could get lucky. (Also, the water is a bit colder than it is down south.)

Your best bet is probably the beach at the Marina. maps.yahoo.com It's a good walking/people watching beach, it doesn't get the fog, and if it's cold you can always just go to North Beach for lunch.

(:

Funny thing about Emmeryville is that you don't even know you're in Emmeryville. You'd think you're in Oakland, or Berkeley. All you see is the Bay on one side, and the huge 880/Bay Bridge loop-de-loop on the other side. And then that constant loud buzz of the millions of cars.

Neat little Marina though. And probably the best wind surfing spot in California.

OT Jane, I would skip the beaches and go to wine country - Sonoma or Napa. The best views of the Bay Area are in the Marin headlands, just across the Golden Gate Bridge. If you must go to the beach, then Capitola is fun and you can still go to wineries in the Santa Cruz Mtns. Then again, you could try to visit Larry ...
