As for the rest of your post, I can't think of a better example of the spiritual divide between post-Vatican II Catholics and born-again fundamentalist Protestants. But this isn't the place to argue about religion. Which I never do, anyway. Especially not with fundamentalists.

Jack Miles is a good source for the questions you raise in your post. His first book, God: A Biography, traces the development of God's personality in the Old Testament from a revengeful, active presence, to a loving, less involved presence as the Testament progress through time. I haven't read his book on Jesus yet but the reviews suggest that it is also excellent. Myron
