Israeli Delegation to Head for U.N. Over Fact-Finding Mission in Jenin ----------------------------------------------------------- Xinhuanet 2002-04-24 22:37:57 JERUSALEM, April 24 (Xinhuanet) -- An Israeli delegation, consisting of legal and military experts from the government, has been scheduled to leave for New York Wednesday evening to discuss the U.N. fact-finding mission in the refugee camp in the West Bank town of Jenin. The delegation, led by Defense Ministry's Deputy-Director Moshe Kochnovski, will hold meetings with U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan over the mission. Israel has demanded that the investigation of the refugee camp be limited exclusively to fact finding and that the team not draw up and present conclusions. In addition, the delegation will demand that the mandate for the fact-finding team be drafted according to the regulations established in the setting up of previous similar probes, according to reports here. Israel is now demanding that testimonies and information gathered by the probe not be used for any other procedure and not grant the Palestinians a basis for legal charges to be brought against Israeli military officials. Reversing an earlier pledge of support, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon decided Tuesday night to withhold Israeli cooperation with the U.N. fact-finding team, expressing concern that the team's composition and mandate indicated that it might be weighted toward a pro-Palestinian stance. Hours after Sharon's decision, U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan reportedly said that military experts might be added to the team and agreed to postpone its departure by a day or two, but stressed the mission, headed by former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari, would still reach the region by Saturday. Palestinians have said that hundreds of civilians may have been killed in the camp, including many whose homes were shelled or bulldozed. But the Israeli side has insisted that it killed only a few dozen Palestinians and that 23 Israeli soldiers died in the camp. According to Israel Radio, Israeli Defense Minister Binyamin Ben Eliezer said that the U.N. fact-finding team should look into Palestinian suicide bombings during its investigation in Jenin. Enditem
