we don't need no stink'n durons
130nm athlons will be so cheap to make that the Duron is obsolete marketing wise.

Joe, I just noticed this quote from the article.

"AMD predicts that Opteron will have a nominal performance gain over Athlon of about 25% (at equal clock speeds), where 20% are coming from Opteron's new intergrated low-latency memory interface and 5% from improvements to Opteron's core."

Does this also count the larger L2 cache?

Guys,

OK, the announcement is out. Now I can say a couple of things I couldn't before. And even now some might think I shouldn't say them, but too late. ;D

First, the demo tomorrow will be a dual-SH. Some of you are shocked by this, get over it. It's not the best demo we could do, but I suppose AMD is getting smart enough to leave more carrots out of site for now. ;D Read all you want into this statement, I won't elaborate further.

Next, the 'alleged' e-mail from a week ago, I haven't seen that particular one, but I've seen enough to know it's probably 99.9% authetic. Not think, know. And again, it's not the biggest carrot that could have gotten out. :D

So, AMD has demo'd single CH's, 1-2 months ago. The email tells that Windows 64 has been running for nearly 3 months now. And it only took hours to get it running the first time, who'd have guessed that AMD & MS could work so well together? Of those 2 hours, I'd like to know how much of it was taken up logging the HW into the building through security. ;D

AMD will now demo 2P SH's. Keep SH's architecture in mind, if 2P works, then 4P & 8P work. And it doesn't take much to go 16,32,64... It's easy to scale. GamingDirk just posted a thought thinking about this... hmmm, you'll have to guess still, I'd hate to speak before JS3 gets to... (respect for my boss's boss's boss's ... err, my salary) ;D

And AMD will demo Windows AMD64 (#$&^%#*$% they didn't announce my preferred name, don't they know who I am!!! oh, maybe marketing guys don't know who I am, marketing guys, send me an email & I'd be happy to introduce myself! ;D ) running a server version on multiple CPUs. But that email didn't say if it was running SH or CH or MP... any guesses? I won't say! :D Maybe this is what the 'multiple versions of windows-AMD64' was all about??? :D

But wait, who was it that said MS wouldn't announce AMD64 support this early? Duttermohl, was it you? Would you care for some salt with those words??? ;D

Only one thing bothered me. MS didn't seem to have a big presense with this announcement. I'd bet AMD would have preferred to make this the centerpiece of WinHEC, but that didn't happen. I'd bet that AMD would have liked to have JS3 & BG standing side by side for this announcement, but that didn't happen. MS may still be trying to appease intel by not getting 'too' close with AMD...

Momentum!

Warning: this post is worth every penny you paid for it... :o(

PS: Is it better to not know & talk about all kinds of possibilities, or to know & not be able to talk about things??? Choices in life...

PPS: I'm just p*ssed that my projection that JS3 says he's retiring, and then Hector saying he's taking over, aren't the 2 big announcements!!!
