What do people think of the 20-25% Hammer improvement over Athlon? Seems a bit underwhelming, especially considering all the performance hype on the threads the past several months. And, this seems like a best case scenerio...

I don't know what they were comparing. I think there should be a significant difference between a processor with 512K L2, single memory channel and a processor with 1MB L2 and dual memory channel. An on-chip memory controller will reduce these differences somewhat, but will not eliminate them.
