>, on the contrary the issue came up; that's why Netanyahu was the clear cut favorite until Barak finessed him out of the race.

Not really. Netanyahu was favored over Sharon because of the same reasons we like him in the states- he's young, charismatic, and well-spoken.

That too but Sharon had the stigma of what had happened in Lebanon hanging over him.

Netanyahu was driven out of the race later on because he was accused of, I believe, bribery, and wasn't absolved until after the election was over. That's why they picked Sharon.

I don't think so.......as I understand it, Barak had the law changed so that you had to be a member of parliament to run for the prime minister position. Previously, Netanyahu had resigned his position in Parliament.

>The Israeli tribunal back in the early 1980's didn't just slap Sharon's hand; he was forced to resign.

Sort of. He was forced to resign as Defense Minister, but not from the Cabinet. They didn't think what he did made him a terrible guy, just someone not suitable to run the army after making such a bad blunder.

I don't understand.....I thought Defense Minister was his position in the cabinet and that he was forced out of the gov't by the tribunal. After that, he stayed out of the gov't until the early 90's when he then became Housing Minister and surprise, surprise.... oversaw the development of some of the largest housing projects in the WB settlements.

Z, I have got to say Sharon's a real charmer.
