Yes, all you say is quite on-target except that sometimes,
as many of us sadly know, the mob will rule when a few
who know how to lead a mob around by the nose pulls them
into doing what is counter to their health & safety. Based on
the personal attacks i get for my on-topic posts via GATA,
that are orchestrated by just a few based on their inability
to accept that others not only have a better handle on events,
but that they are actually doing something that makes a difference,
rather than that activity i posted where certain folks here that think
that they are making a difference are only being lead around by
their noses by the forces they are fighting. So as GATA accomplishes
all that is good for gold, these few counter GATA thinking that
they are helping gold, while being unaware that they are being
lead by the nose of anti-gold forces. Nothing new here, really,
just a continuation of the battles between Good & Evil where
Evil has always had the upper hand for the simply reason that
the mob, 99% of folks, allow themselves to follow the path most
easy and the path with the most false promises a.k.a. stuff or glory
that requires or demands that you not do any understanding,
and ofcourse, no investigation to validity. No problem for me as
i will modify my GATA additions to this thread so that i do not
lose my Si membership. Since very few others support the GATA effort
on this thread, and very few speak up like you and a number i can
count on my one hand to give me public support, i have no problem
letting the mob dictate the rules for this thread, to their lost.
The stage is quite well set for ACT II as the curtain for that
which is called gold manipulation is falling and once the curtain
is raises other curtains will also be raised showing that GATA
is just one important room of a full house of cards called United States.

(don't know but most likely a repeat t.v. program)

Subj: NIGHTLINE: In The National Interest

TONIGHT'S SUBJECT: We went to war in Afghanistan to fight terrorism. But
there may be an added benefit. Our success there may make a long-time
dream of the this country, and the oil companies, come true. Because
Central Asia has oil. Lots of it.

Wars have been fought in and over Afghanistan and Central Asia for
centuries. Looking at the region, sometimes it's hard to imagine why
thousands of lives have been lost in fighting over pretty desolate
terrain. As in virtually all real estate issues, it comes down to
location, location, location. There is oil in Central Asia, a lot of it in
the former republics of the Soviet Union, those countries sometimes
referred to as the "-stans." You know, all those countries that end in
"-stan." Well you may not be able to find them on a map, and probably
can't spell them, but they represent the possibility of breaking our
dependence on the Persian Gulf for oil.

The problem is getting it out of there. The U.S. does not want any oil
pipelines to go out through Russia, for obvious reasons. The same goes for
Iran. But one possibility has always been through Afghanistan. Now the oil
companies have been working on this for a long time. Condaleeza Rice, now
the National Security Advisor, used to be on the board of Chevron. They
even named a tanker after her. The man who is now President Bush's special
envoy for Afghanistan is a former Pentagon official who was a consultant
to UNOCAL on their efforts to build a pipeline through Afghanistan. He was
involved when a high-level delegation of Taliban was brought to Houston.
They were shown around, taken to the Houston zoo, even given money for a
shopping trip, all to try to win their help. Vice-President Cheney was an
advisor to one of the new governments in the region, the same government
that Condaleeza Rice's Chevron was negotiating with.

Now, in the wake of the war in Afghanistan, the U.S. has built bases
there, and also in some of the surrounding countries, something that would
have been unthinkable just a few years ago. What does all this mean? It
means that the U.S. may finally be in a position to provide security for a
pipeline and the oil fields. And there is enough oil there to offset any
halt in production by Iraq, for example. But this also means that we are
now working with our new allies in the region, some of which are less than
paragons of democracy, to say the least. But sometimes governments will
look the other way on things like that when their national interests are
at stake. And that is why we are calling this two-part series "In the
National Interest." Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld is off to the region
today, to tour some of those new bases.

Tonight's broadcast is the first of two, the second will run tomorrow
night, laying out this whole situation. Is this why we went to war over
there? No. But the U.S. certainly seems positioned to take advantage of
the new realities. I hope you'll join us.
