DWB, would you include legal rights for unborn zygotes or just where would you draw the line and what legal rights should a single human cell have? With cloning, the idea of having contraception as the official start of life will not be a good dividing line - there will soon be people who were never conceived!

When you write "grant legal status to our own", just who do you mean by "our". Heck, Americans don't even grant legal status to aliens - they are caged, bound and blindfolded and held without trial or habeas corpus.

I imagine the legal rights granted to chimpoids [and maybe other animals] would be comparable to the legal rights of aliens who have no intention or ability to comply with any kind of laws.

Being a hirsute cousin myself, I give a flip about me [my hairy arms and prehensile paws remind me very much of a gibbon]. I would like some legal protection.
