Hi QwikSand - What equivalent chip set(s) does AMD or Intel server designs use that incorporate those features now available in Sunw's V880 line? LSI is a low cost producer and has been working with Sunw for some time to optimize the I/O server performance in these products.

-- LSI Logic announced the supplying of high-performance I/O and system ASICs to Sun Microsystems for its eight-way Sun Fire V880 server family. The Sun-designed chipset includes two 1.2 million gate ASICs from LSI Logic. lsilogic.com

From the article:

<..."Our long, established relationship with Sun has resulted from our commitment to keeping our customers at the leading edge of the technology curve," said Dave Jones, vice president and general manager of LSI Logic's Storage and Computer ASIC Division. "Our engineering teams worked together to ensure that the chipset enabled the high-performance, scalable and cost-effective solution that met Sun's time-to-market requirements."...>

I assume that it will take time for the Wintel group to design and manufacture equivalent ASIC components to achieve the same performance targets SUNW now obtains in their current design.

I suspect Sunw's management has and continues to research all new emerging technologies to maintain their lead in this market. However, there is no doubt that competition is targeting the middle to high end server market for new products but that is the nature of the business.

EKS

<<this Hammer development means that the standardizing and commoditizing of an x86-compatible 64-bit design is now close.>>

Close, but no cigar. AMD has been breaking investors hearts with 'close' for far too many years...
