Really. All it means is to "stand under". But people seem to have invented a graduation of meanings just so as to be able to add a number of nuances to it such as: appreciate, comprehend, grasp, show tolerance, and so forth. Instead of a spade you got a hoe, a rake, and a box of oranges. I just find it confusing. I surely wish I could find some different words that were not so inexact and frustrating...
