A fraction of the populace embraces them and another fraction heaps opprobrium on them. Most people could care less. I don't mean to sound insensitive, but there is more tolerance out there than you might know. When I worked in the oil patch I was surprised at the number of men who were homosexual. The percentage was a lot higher than the general population. And we're talking dyed in the wool redneck here. There were no strains at all in the barrooms, they were just one of the boys. And nobody messed with them, but even if they did, a lot of the guys were pretty rough birds, not your stereotypical gay. They were capable of taking care of themselves.
