You've got it backwards. OIL is the only reason we're even IN the middle-east. Get off the stuff gradually starting now by developing clean-fuel cars and we can bring all those forces home. Huge savings. The locals obviously don't want us there anyway. Going into ANWAR is just one more fix from the gas-addict's needle. Keeps reliance and pollution going for longer. Bush-Cheney would love that. And who says you can clean up oil spills? Many can never really be cleaned up. Exxon Valdez alone decimated salmon runs forever. There are literal lakes of oil in Alaska which no one is able to clean up. And don't tell me the Gulf Coast is not damaged by oil pollution. Point is to start getting at least 50% off the dirty stuff now. We can do it in 10 years, same time frame as ANWAR drilling and maybe at the same cost.
