Globe/Reuters say JDS plans to chop 2,000 more jobs

Fri 26 Apr 2002

The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, April 26, edition that JDS
Uniphase said Thursday it plans more cost cuts, adding a projected
$165-million in annual savings, to bring the total annual cost reduction
rate to more than $1-billion. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that
JDS plans to cut about 2,000 more jobs and close additional sites. JDS
estimated the total cost of its restructuring will be about $1.1-billion,
of which $876-million was recorded through the end of the third quarter. A
charge of $25-million was recorded in the third quarter. JDS expects a
fourth quarter loss, excluding charges under its restructuring program, of
three cents to four cents a share on sales of $210-million to $230-million.
The loss in the third quarter ended March 30 was $4.3-billion or $3.19 a
share compared with a whopping loss of $41.8-billion or $36.63 in the
year-ago period. Revenue in the quarter plunged to $261.8-million, down
from $920.1-million in the prior year's quarter. Excluding one-time items,
JDS posted a loss of $66-million or five cents a diluted share, compared
with a profit last year of $160-million or 14 cents.
