Patrick,

I don't think the Clawhammer DP should even exist. The CPU in the Opteron servers was Sledgehammer.

On software, I should have paid more attention. Now I am not even sure if the client machines were 32 bit or 64 bit OS. It's just that somehow I have this 64bit Internet Explorer stuck in my head. It wouldn't make much sense to have it on the server.

I wonder if the Internet Explorer was running under the Terminal Server...

Joe

Re: I still don't see the Opterons being near the class of the Itanium

I think you've got it backwards. The Opterons are a whole class above Itanium.

Check out this blurb from HP on what it's HP only, far better than Intel's hoi polloi chipset, supports:

The HP zx1 memory and I/O controller interfaces to the McKinley processor bus and provides a low-latency connection to DDR memory either directly or through HP zx1 scalable memory expanders. The HP zx1 I/O adapter chip supports PCI, PCI-X and AGP bus architectures. It provides scalable I/O implementation for a wide variety of systems. The optional HP zx1 scalable memory expander quadruples main memory capacity and increases bandwidth to main memory to 12.8 GBs.

That's as good as it's going to get for Itanium for a while.

Now consider the base level Opteron: the 4-way offers twice the bandwidth at lower latency, and lower cost (glueless MP) and the 8-way offers 4 times the bandwidth, lower latency, and lower cost.

Opteron is more like a Z900 mainframe, where memory bandwidth increases as additional processors are added.
