There is a huge cavern between a mandate to see that you suffer and one that prohibits a third party in assisting suicide.

Ashcroft is simply doing what he was widely expected to do: looking for some legal grounds to impose his personal religious conviction on the rest of the country. This should come as no surprise to anyone.
