The information was that there were 400 persons working outside the village. Apparently, for over 350 of them, it was possible to comply with the curfew, so it appears to be the case that the Israelis spread the word, as they said they would. Under the circumstances, the appearance of any significant group of persons might cause panic. You cite some details I had not read, but since it was not unknown for Palestinian men to dress as women, or to use children as fighters, the order you cite may be more understandable than you portray it. In any event, I am not "desperate to find an excuse for mass murder", I am trying to consider the circumstances of the action, which are not clear at all.
