Dan,

I think a lot of people are missing that AMD is working very hard to be able to quickly establish X86-64, with DDR memory and Hypertransport I/O as the standard hardware platform. To do this, they have to be able to offer sub $999 PC's using that technology 12 months from now. That will require them to have an inexpensive platform available for the low end.

My preference would be to come out with a chip that is unquestionably high end desktop (dual memory channel) and move on to lower end ($999) later on, with single DDR channel.

As is, I don't see a high end desktop part, only mainstream desktop part on the roadmap. A high end desktop part needs to have dual DDR channel.

Joe

Dan, Re: "How many Itanics will have sailed by then? 1 million?"

I would consider that a monumental success. The 4-way and above server market is only a million or so processors large, so such volumes would give Itanium nearly 100% market share in those areas. Or are you expecting Itanium to proliferate to more volume markets by next year?

Dan3:

"The past 6 months haven't been the best, but they've been competing against Intel burning $5 Billion in accumulated assets to deny AMD $500 million in revenue for the year (look at Intel's CAPEX over time, you'll see the huge surge, and it's $5 billion they will never get back)."

The INTC choiristers keep dumping on JS...They don't even realize that INTC's management is burning assets at a rate that JS has never come close to...INTC's performance over the past 3 years, for anyone who can read the financials, is downright frightening...I guess as long as INTC can "buy" a positive eps, the INTC shareholders don't care...

Dan3 - You wrote P4 offers only a miserable 32-bits,

Just like the Athlon offers only a miserable 32-bits - right, Dan3?
Will Athlon sales go to zero very soon?
